About
Cave Fiction
Welcome to my cave. I hope you find the darkness and slight moistness
pleasant. There is a fire going in the centre of the cave, and there is
enough room to stand in most places. Scattered around the floor is a
collection of firewood, beds and storage areas. There is a narrow deep
trench outside that the cave is concealed within, and this trench
carries on a little way down the hill to carry water away. A small
river runs through the trench, full of clear and pure water. A large
pile of granite rocks conceal the entrance, and a door has been
fashioned from nearby oak branches.
I have finally coated the gap between the hillside and the rock of my
cave with a waterproof sealant, so although no water will get in, it
will retain it's authentic rocky look. Aside from waterproofing
benefits, this also acts as insulation - thus requiring less of my
precious wood stock to keep warm.
Now that Summer is fast approaching, the trees within the small valley
that my cave is in have begun to re-sprout, and the shrubbery has grown
ten-fold. Now there are lots of plants to eat, use for fuel and shelter.
A safety issue has arisen with the possibility of becoming trapped
within the cave, which has caused me to expand the cave. I now have dug
a second exit, that is heavily concealed on both ends. Whilst
performing this operation, I also took the time to give the cave a
spring-cleaning - now all the mold and dirt has been cleaned, making
for a much more comfortable living space. Lastly, I discovered a small
leak in one corner, and decided to investigate. My findings were that
there is some form of natural cave concealed behind one of my walls - a
finding that I will be investigating further when I have more time.
Unfortunately, it seems that the natural cave was only about two foot
in diameter, but it is enough to store the cold foods in! I've rigged
sealant into it, and put up a rickety wooden door to it. The cupboard
is now partially full of various pickles and natural potions, and I
have started to add some functionality items to the cave. Such items
include a small bread oven built into the side of the fire pit in the
style of a Celtic hut's one, and also in similar style I have suspended
a cast-iron cooking pot from the roof using iron links.
What?
The idea of my cave is basically metaphorical for that place which I
dream of, where I can live in comfort and the style that I'd prefer.
This is a fictitious description of that perfect place, built upon a
mental image of many places I have been in the past that I loved -
including many sites upon Dartmoor.
Mind, saying all that - I'd rather live in a comfortable home than a cave if for anything more than a few days!
